Abstract:

In the context of interoperability, there is a rising need for sharing information and integrating heterogeneous databases. In order to deal with semantic heterogeneity in geospatial databases, it is necessary to associate different classification schemata. This paper introduces a formal methodology, to handle the problem of semantic integration of thematic classifications. The method is named Spatial Concept Lattices (SCL), for it utilises the mathematical theory of Formal Concept Analysis, in order to derive lattices of spatial concepts. The applicability of the method is tested on the problem of integrating classification schemata from nomenclatures specified by different projects and standards.
